Bumrah and Hardik script stunning comeback to lead India to T20 World Cup glory

India fought back, and South Africa needed 30 off 30 balls to win their maiden World Cup on the spin.

It was a beautiful comeback for Bangladesh from behind and one for India from the grave, as Suryakumar Yadav snatched a boundary catch for the ages, Jasprit Bumrah snuck in two electric final overs, and Hardik Pandya pilfered the two big wickets to help pull off one of India’s great heists in a World Cup final at last.

South Africa were rampant with just five overs to run. It’s Heinrich Klaasen, one of the great hitters in the game, threatening to throw off centuries of painful big match history for his team with a hail of sixes. There were 30 balls still remaining, and South Africa required just a run-a-ball after David Miller and Keegan Peterson had joined hands to club 38 runs off the previous two overs and with six wickets in hand.

Arshdeep plays his role

Almost as outstanding was Arshdeep Singh, who returned 2 for 20. He went for just eight with his two powerplay overs and took the important wicket of Aiden Markram, who edged him towards the slips. He dismissed Quinton de Kock after the South African had overseen a two-blow recovery in the middle overs.

Did South Africa choke?

You couldn’t perhaps have ended up with that conclusion after 35 overs of this game. Both were pumped up in the early overs, Keshav Maharaj taking two and Rabada dismissing Suryakumar (India’s most dangerous batter). They caught well and were good in the fields.

They also overcame losing early wickets nicely. At one juncture, they required 26 off 24 balls, were six down, but had one over of Bumrah left to play. It’s the smart play in that situation, so they went to mark Hardik, which they did, but both his key batters fell to him.

There are simpler explanations, too: India was battle-hardened and skillful; South Africa’s batting line-up was short.
